Below are 20 criticisms that Buddhists commonly raise about the Bahá’í Faith, each with the answer Bahá’ís give, in English and Thai. Buddhism and the Bahá’í Faith start from different premises about God, the self and rebirth, so several of these are real differences and not misunderstandings, and I say so where that is the case. Bahá’ís honour the Buddha as one of the Manifestations of God (in Bahá’í terms) and respect Buddhism, but they speak only for their own beliefs. The answers work best when given with courtesy and in the Buddha’s own spirit of ehipassiko, “come and see”, which invites investigation and does not ask for acceptance.
1. “The Buddha taught a complete path to liberation. The Dhamma needs no addition, and no later teacher can improve on a Fully Awakened One”
Bahá’ís honour the Buddha as a fully awakened Teacher and do not say his path was incomplete or mistaken. They say it was complete for the people and age he taught, and that the Bahá’í Faith offers further guidance for an age when humanity is becoming one global community. The idea that the Dhamma is taught again is not foreign to Buddhism. The Pali canon names six earlier Buddhas (DN 14) and foretells Metteyya (DN 26), and the Buddha described his own message as the rediscovery of an ancient path (SN 12.65). Buddhists hold that each Buddha rediscovers the same truth after the earlier teaching has faded, whereas Bahá’ís hold that revelation is renewed with fresh social teachings, so the two pictures are not identical. The commentarial tradition also says the Buddha’s teaching will last about 5,000 years, so Buddhists, too, expect it to decline in time. Bahá’ís do not say that Bahá’u’lláh surpassed the Buddha as a person. Buddhists may still feel that placing the Dhamma within a sequence of revelations lowers its uniqueness, and Bahá’ís accept that this is a sincere concern.

2. “The Buddha never spoke of God or claimed to be a messenger, so calling him a ‘Manifestation of God’ misrepresents him”
This is a fair objection. The Buddha did not call himself a messenger of God, and “Manifestation of God” is a Bahá’í term, not a Buddhist one. Bahá’ís use it to express their own understanding of the Buddha’s station, and they do not ask Buddhists to adopt it. The Buddha called himself the Tathāgata, the Awakened One, and said he was neither a god nor an ordinary human being but simply “awake” (AN 4.36). On God, Bahá’ís note that the Buddha set aside speculative questions that did not lead to liberation (MN 63) and spoke of an Unborn, Unmade, Unconditioned reality (Udāna 8.3). They read these as pointing to a reality beyond all concepts, which resembles Bahá’u’lláh’s teaching that God’s essence cannot be described. Mahayana ideas such as the Dharmakāya may come closer still. Buddhists will answer that the Unconditioned is Nibbāna and not a Creator, and Bahá’ís accept that the two are not identical. Bahá’ís also acknowledge that the explicit naming of the Buddha as a Manifestation comes largely from ‘Abdu’l-Bahá and Shoghi Effendi.

3. “Bahá’ís believe in a Creator God, but the Buddha taught there is no creator and refuted that view”
Early Buddhist texts criticise the idea of a supreme creator who controls everything. The Brahmajāla Sutta (DN 1) describes Mahābrahmā wrongly thinking he created beings, and AN 3.61 warns that such a view leads to fatalism. Bahá’ís respect that critique. The God of Bahá’u’lláh is not a person, a being among beings, or a cosmic ruler who intervenes like a king. Bahá’u’lláh teaches that God’s essence is beyond all human thought, description and image. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá also taught that the universe has no beginning and that creation is eternal, so there is no first cause in time, which is a common Buddhist objection. Bahá’ís insist as well on free will and moral responsibility, which echoes the Buddha’s emphasis on kamma as intentional action. A real difference remains. Bahá’ís hold that existence depends on God and that human beings find their purpose in knowing and loving Him, while Buddhists find liberation by understanding dependent origination, with no reference to a divine source. Bahá’ís do not hide this difference, and they do not ask Buddhists to believe in God as a condition of respect.

4. “Bahá’ís teach an eternal soul, which contradicts anattā (no-self)”
The Buddha taught that nothing among the five aggregates can be called a permanent self (SN 22.59), so as to free people from clinging. Bahá’ís teach that the human soul is a sign of God, begins at conception and continues after death. These are different descriptions, and Bahá’ís do not hide that. They add that the soul is not a physical thing, is not located in the body, and is known through its powers of mind, will and love, which grow or weaken according to how a person lives. In that sense the Bahá’í soul is not a fixed, unchanging substance, which some Buddhists find closer than they expected. The Buddha also declined to answer Vacchagotta when asked whether a self exists or not (SN 44.10), and later Buddhist schools disagreed about what continues. The Pudgalavādins spoke of a person-like continuity, and Mahayana teachings on Buddha-nature speak of a potential in all beings. Bahá’ís accept that Theravada orthodoxy regards an eternal soul as the very view of self that the Buddha rejected, and that the disagreement is real.

5. “The Buddha taught rebirth and kamma, but Bahá’ís reject reincarnation”
This is a genuine difference. The Buddha taught rebirth and kamma plainly, and Bahá’ís do not accept that the same person returns to live again on earth in another body. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá taught that each person has one earthly life, after which the soul continues to progress through the many worlds of God. Bahá’ís do believe in moral cause and effect: deeds shape the condition of the soul in this life and the next, and there is accountability. Bahá’ís also note that the Buddha described rebirth without a transmigrating self, which differs from the Hindu idea of a soul passing from body to body that ‘Abdu’l-Bahá argued against. They read some talk of “return” in earlier religions as the return of qualities and spiritual power, not of the same individual. Buddhists will reply that rebirth is central to the Dhamma and cannot be treated as symbolic. Bahá’ís do not claim they can disprove rebirth by argument, and they hold their view as part of their faith in Bahá’u’lláh’s teaching. Both traditions agree that actions matter, that selfish craving does harm, and that this life is an opportunity for growth.

6. “Nibbāna is the end of dukkha, but Bahá’ís describe ‘nearness to God’, which is a different goal”
Buddhists seek the end of dukkha and of the cycle of rebirth by ending greed, hatred and delusion. Bahá’ís describe the goal as drawing near to God, knowing and loving Him, and developing spiritual qualities without end. These are different goals, and Bahá’ís do not claim they are the same. There are overlaps. Both traditions stress freedom from selfish desire. Bahá’ís call it detachment and speak of the lower self as a veil between a person and God. Bahá’ís also reject the idea that Nibbāna is simply annihilation, which agrees with the Buddha, who refused to say that the Tathāgata “exists”, “does not exist” or both after death (MN 72). The main difference is that Bahá’ís describe the soul’s progress as unending, while Buddhists speak of an end to becoming. Bahá’ís suggest that each tradition may be using different language for a condition that human concepts cannot fully hold, and Bahá’u’lláh himself says the higher stations are beyond description. Many Buddhists will find this too accommodating, because to them Nibbāna is not a version of anything else.

7. “Bahá’ís say Bahá’u’lláh is Maitreya, but the Buddha said Metteyya will come when human lifespan is 80,000 years (DN 26)”
Letters written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi say that Bahá’u’lláh fulfils the Buddhist promise of the coming Buddha, Maitreya (Metteyya). Buddhists answer that DN 26 places Metteyya in the distant future, when human lifespan has risen to 80,000 years and the world is prosperous. Bahá’ís reply that scripture often uses numbers and conditions symbolically, as Jews and Christians have found with their own prophecies, and that literal expectations have caused many Messengers to be missed. They also point out that Maitreya means “the Loving One”, and that the promise of a Buddha who teaches universal friendliness and ends strife fits Bahá’u’lláh’s message of love and unity. In Mahayana tradition Maitreya now waits in the Tusita heaven, and ideas of a coming world teacher appear in other Buddhist currents such as Shambhala. Bahá’ís apply the same pattern to other faiths, saying that Bahá’u’lláh fulfils Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu promises, so they are applying a principle and not making one literal claim. They accept that most Buddhists read the texts literally, and that the Bahá’í claim rests more on Bahá’u’lláh’s teachings than on matching prophecies.

8. “Bahá’ís say Buddhist teachings were corrupted, but the Pali canon is a reliable record”
Bahá’í sources say that the Buddha’s original teachings are not fully known today and that later followers added to them. Buddhists answer that the Pali canon was recited and preserved by the community from the time of the Buddha’s passing, and many scholars regard the early discourses as reliable. Bahá’ís do not say Buddhism is false, and they do not accuse anyone of deliberate falsification. The historical record is that the Buddha taught orally, and the canon was first written down in Sri Lanka around the first century BCE. Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana also differ widely over which texts and doctrines are authoritative, and Buddhists themselves teach that the sāsana declines over time. So the idea that teaching changes over the centuries is not foreign. Bahá’ís respect the Pali canon and the care with which monks have preserved it. They ask only that their view be understood as a belief about spiritual renewal and not as an attack on Buddhist scholarship. Buddhists who find the early texts a faithful record of the Buddha’s words are entitled to say so, and Bahá’ís do not claim to settle the matter by argument.

9. “Progressive revelation puts Bahá’u’lláh above the Buddha, but the Buddha is the supreme teacher, a Sammāsambuddha”
Bahá’ís teach that all Manifestations are one in spiritual reality and rank. Progressive revelation does not mean that later teachers are better persons. It means that each brings guidance suited to the capacity and needs of the age. The Buddha’s mission addressed the human condition, and Bahá’u’lláh’s addresses the unification of humanity, but Bahá’ís do not say that either attained something the other did not. This is close to a Buddhist idea: the Buddhas of all ages are equal in awakening and differ only in details such as era, lifespan and manner of teaching (Buddhavaṃsa). Buddhists may still object that if the Buddha was a Sammāsambuddha, nothing remains to be added, and the Dhamma is available as long as the Noble Eightfold Path is practised. Bahá’ís reply that spiritual truth is constant while social teachings are renewed, and that they would never discourage the practice of the Dhamma. They recognise that Buddhists do not feel their path needs a successor, and they do not ask Buddhists to say otherwise.

10. “Bahá’ís forbid monasticism, but the Sangha is one of the Three Jewels”
This is a real difference. Bahá’u’lláh forbids monasticism and mendicancy and asks believers to work, marry if they wish, and serve society, because Bahá’ís hold that a spiritual life is lived in the world. Bahá’ís note that the Buddha himself taught the Middle Way and rejected extreme self-mortification (SN 56.11), and that lay disciples such as Anāthapiṇḍika and Visākhā supported the Sangha and were praised for their virtue. Bahá’ís respect the Sangha’s historic role in preserving the teachings, educating communities and teaching compassion, and they are encouraged to treat monks and temples with courtesy. Service in the Bahá’í Faith is also close in spirit to dāna and mettā. Buddhists will answer that renunciation is the swiftest path for those able to follow it, and that the Sangha is the supreme field of merit. Bahá’ís accept that this difference stands. It also means that the Bahá’í Faith has no ordained order that could meet the Sangha as a counterpart, so dialogue usually takes place between individuals and communities.

11. “Bahá’ís lack a meditation method, whereas Buddhism offers sati, samatha and vipassanā”
Bahá’ís have a daily obligatory prayer, an annual nineteen-day fast, and a strong emphasis on reflecting on the Writings. The Bahá’í writings also encourage meditation, and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá describes it as a means of communion with the spiritual world. The Bahá’í Faith does not prescribe a particular technique, and it has no tradition of retreats or graded meditative states. Bahá’ís also believe that spiritual life is expressed in action and service as much as in prayer. Buddhists point out that sati, samatha and vipassanā are a carefully tested training of the mind, and that the Buddha’s path gives a method and not only inspiration. The Dhammapada sums it up: avoid evil, cultivate good, purify the mind (Dhp 183). This is an honest gap. Bahá’í tradition has a less developed contemplative method. Bahá’ís are free to learn from Buddhist methods of mindfulness, and many do so individually, since nothing in Bahá’í teaching forbids meditation and believers are encouraged to learn from every source of wisdom. Bahá’ís would not suggest that prayer replaces what Buddhists gain from meditation.

12. “‘All religions are one’ flattens real differences (syncretism)”
Bahá’ís do not say all religions teach the same doctrines. They say that the world’s religions share foundational spiritual and moral principles, such as love, truthfulness, detachment and service, while differing in doctrine, social teaching and the language used for ultimate reality. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá openly noted differences between religions, and the Bahá’í Faith presents itself as an independent religion and not a blend of others. This very document names real differences on God, the self and rebirth. The unity Bahá’ís speak of is the unity of humanity and the harmony of religious communities, not sameness. Buddhists also recognise a diversity of traditions within their own faith, such as Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana, and many Buddhist leaders have taken part in interfaith cooperation without saying that all teachings are identical. Some Buddhists think “all religions are paths up the same mountain” is too loose, and Bahá’ís agree it should not be used to hide real differences. They ask that dialogue begin with honest acknowledgement of them.

13. “The Buddha taught self-reliance, but Bahá’ís rely on a Manifestation and an administrative order”
In the Mahāparinibbāna Sutta (DN 16) the Buddha told Ānanda to be an island and a refuge to oneself, and the Dhammapada says the Buddhas only point the way (Dhp 276). Bahá’ís agree with the spirit of this. They teach that every person must independently investigate truth, an idea close to the Kālāma Sutta (AN 3.65). They teach that there is no priesthood and that no one can be saved on another’s behalf. They also teach that spiritual progress depends on each person’s own effort. A Manifestation, like the Buddha, is a teacher who shows the way, and Bahá’ís do not pray to be rescued from the results of their actions. The Bahá’í administrative order is elected and has no clergy, and it handles community affairs and not individual conscience. The Buddha himself founded an order with the Vinaya and, before his passing, named the Dhamma and the Vinaya as the community’s guide. The difference is that Bahá’ís also teach reliance on divine assistance, which some Buddhists regard as foreign to the Buddha’s emphasis on self-reliance. Bahá’ís accept that this is a point of real contrast.

14. “Bahá’í teaching on suffering differs from the First Noble Truth”
The Buddha’s insight is that dukkha arises from craving and can be ended by following the Noble Eightfold Path. Bahá’ís agree that selfish desire and attachment are major sources of suffering and that detachment brings freedom, and Bahá’u’lláh’s Hidden Words speak of freeing the heart from worldly things. Bahá’ís add other causes: ignorance, injustice, prejudice and natural limits. They also hold that difficulties can refine the soul, as ‘Abdu’l-Bahá compared tests to the polishing of a mirror. They give weight to a social diagnosis too, saying that much suffering comes from unjust structures, which is why they work for education, equality of women and men, and the removal of prejudice. Engaged Buddhist teachers such as Thích Nhất Hạnh and Buddhadāsa have also linked inner transformation with social change. The difference is that Bahá’ís do not regard existence itself as dukkha. They see life as a gift and the world as a place for spiritual growth. Buddhists may feel this does not reach the depth of the First Noble Truth, and Bahá’ís accept that the two starting points are not the same.

15. “Bahá’í conversion weakens Buddhist culture and national harmony”
Bahá’ís respect Buddhist culture, and they do not ask anyone to reject their nation, family or heritage. In Thailand, where religion, culture and national identity are closely linked, Bahá’ís are asked to obey the law, to respect the government and institutions of the country, to avoid partisan politics, and to treat monks and temples with courtesy. The Bahá’í Faith rejects coercion in matters of belief, and the Thai constitution protects freedom of religion. Bahá’ís teach openly, do not offer material inducement, and consider conversion a personal decision reached through free investigation. Most Bahá’í activity is service: classes for children and youth, study circles and community building open to people of every religion. Many Bahá’ís in Southeast Asia come from Buddhist families and keep respectful relations with them. Buddhists have a reasonable concern that any spreading religion might loosen social bonds, and Bahá’ís respond that they try to strengthen them. They understand that some Buddhists would prefer no one try to change their religion, and they respect that choice.

16. “Bahá’í cycles of history conflict with Buddhist cosmology, kappas and countless world systems”
Buddhist teaching speaks of vast cycles (kappas) and countless world systems. Bahá’í writings speak of the Adamic cycle of about six thousand years and a Bahá’í cycle of at least five hundred thousand years. Bahá’ís explain that these cycles describe the history of religion and civilisation and not the age of the universe, and that the “Adam” of the Adamic cycle is the first Manifestation of that cycle, not the first human being. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá taught that the universe has no beginning, that life may exist on other worlds, and that science and religion must agree, so Bahá’ís accept the scientific age of the cosmos. In this they come close to the Buddhist view that no first point of the round of existence can be found (SN 15.1). Both traditions use very large numbers, and Buddhists themselves differ over how literally to take them. Bahá’ís recognise that Buddhist cosmology includes realms of rebirth that Bahá’í teaching does not describe, and they do not claim their cycles correspond to kappas.

17. “The Bahá’í Faith is a Western, Abrahamic framework that does not fit Asian religions”
The Bahá’í Faith arose in Iran, in Asia, and its largest communities today are in Asia and Africa. India alone is home to one of the largest Bahá’í populations in the world, and the Lotus Temple in Delhi is a well-known House of Worship. The language of “God” and “Manifestation” comes from the Middle Eastern setting in which Bahá’u’lláh taught, but Bahá’ís believe its principles can be expressed in the idiom of every culture. Buddhists are right that terms from one tradition can distort another. Bahá’ís are asked to take care when speaking about the Buddha and Buddhism, to use Buddhist sources, and to listen to Buddhists. Bahá’ís do not say Buddhism is Abrahamic, and they accept that Buddhists have their own categories. Bahá’ís in Buddhist countries include many people with a Buddhist background. Buddhists may still feel that the Bahá’í framework is too centred on God and prophets to fit the Buddha’s non-theistic path, and Bahá’ís accept that this is a sincere view.

18. “Bahá’ís motivate people by fear and reward, and ask for faith, whereas the Buddha asks us to see for ourselves”
Bahá’ís are taught to worship God out of love, not fear or hope of reward. Bahá’u’lláh writes in the Hidden Words, “Love Me, that I may love thee.” ‘Abdu’l-Bahá taught that reward and punishment in the next world are the natural results of one’s conduct, as health follows care and illness follows neglect. This is close to the Buddhist understanding of kamma as a natural law and not a divine verdict. On faith, Bahá’ís teach that it must rest on investigation and reason, that religion contradicting science is superstition, and that blind imitation of ancestors or leaders is a failing. This is close to the Buddha’s invitation in the Kālāma Sutta to test teachings by experience, and to ehipassiko, “come and see”. A real difference remains. Bahá’í faith includes trust in God and in the Manifestation as well as one’s own investigation, whereas Buddhist saddhā is confidence in the Triple Gem confirmed by one’s own practice. Bahá’ís accept that Buddhists may see trust in a divine source as different from confidence in the Dhamma.

19. “Bahá’ís do not require vegetarianism, which conflicts with compassion for all beings”
Bahá’í teaching requires kindness to animals. Cruelty to them is condemned, and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá taught that humans should treat animals with kindness and that hunting for sport is contrary to compassion. He also said that people may eat meat now, but that in the future humanity will probably live on grains and fruits as consciousness grows. The Bahá’í Faith therefore does not require vegetarianism, which differs from the Buddhist emphasis on the first precept, refraining from taking life. Bahá’ís note that the Buddha himself did not make vegetarianism a rule. In the Jīvaka Sutta (MN 55) he allowed monks to eat meat that they had not seen, heard or suspected was killed for them, and he refused Devadatta’s demand to make vegetarianism compulsory. Many Buddhist laypeople eat meat. Bahá’ís respect those Buddhists, monastic and lay, who follow a vegetarian discipline, and they agree with the compassion behind it. They accept that Buddhist ethics extends compassion to all sentient beings more consistently and explicitly than Bahá’í law does at present, and that this is an area where Bahá’ís can learn.

20. “If Bahá’ís honour the Buddha, why do they not follow the Five Precepts and the Vinaya?”
Bahá’ís respond that the moral core of the five precepts is shared. The Bahá’í Faith forbids killing, theft, sexual misconduct (sex outside marriage), lying and backbiting, and the use of alcohol and mind-altering drugs, which corresponds closely to the five precepts. The Bahá’í emphasis on truthfulness and on avoiding backbiting is at least as strong as in the precept on false speech. The difference lies in the further social and ritual laws, such as the Bahá’í obligatory prayer and nineteen-day fast, marriage laws and the administrative order. Bahá’ís understand these to be renewed in each age as the needs of society change, just as the Vinaya rules grew in response to circumstances. Bahá’ís do not ask Buddhists to adopt those laws. Bahá’ís also accept that lay Buddhists keep the precepts as training rules that a person undertakes voluntarily, which is close to how Bahá’ís understand moral effort. Many Buddhists and Bahá’ís find that on daily ethics they are closer than they expected.

How Buddhists typically respond, and a note on tone
Most Buddhists will say that the Bahá’í framework of a God, a soul and a sequence of Messengers does not fit the Buddha’s analysis of dukkha and anattā, and that the Dhamma is verified through practice, not through prophecy. These are serious objections, and the answers above will not persuade someone who sees the Dhamma as complete. Items 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10 and 13 are the points where honest acknowledgement of a lasting difference usually builds more trust than argument. The common ground is substantial: compassion, truthfulness, detachment from selfishness, non-violence, humility and service. Conversations tend to go better when Bahá’ís begin there, listen first, and leave the other person free to disagree.
Two cautions if you use this on your websites. Statements about the Buddha in Bahá’í sources come mostly from ‘Abdu’l-Bahá and Shoghi Effendi, or from letters written on his behalf, so please check my references against the Bahá’í Reference Library. Pali citations (DN, MN, SN, AN) follow the Pali Text Society and online numbering, which differs from the Thai Tipitaka, so a Thai monk or scholar should check them before publication.
