1. “Christ is God’s final word, and nothing may be added” (Heb 1:1–2; Gal 1:8; Rev 22:18–19)
Hebrews says God spoke through the prophets and, “in these last days,” through the Son. Jews in Jesus’ day read Moses and the Law as final in the same way, and Christians do not. Revelation 22 warns against altering “this book,” just as Deuteronomy 4:2 warns against adding to the Law, yet Christians do not treat that as closing off the Gospels. Jesus himself said he had more to say and that the Spirit of Truth would guide his followers further (John 16:12–13). Bahá’ís keep Christ’s station and teachings fully intact. The disagreement is about whether revelation is closed.

2. “Bahá’ís deny the deity of Christ and the Trinity”
Bahá’ís honour Jesus as the Word of God, the Spirit of God, sinless and perfect, and the mirror in which God’s attributes shine. This is close to “whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). What they do not accept is that God’s infinite essence became a man, because they hold that God is transcendent. This is a genuine difference from the Nicene creed. It is worth noting that the Trinity was formulated at Nicaea (325) and Constantinople (381), not in the Gospels themselves. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá read the Trinity as three aspects of God’s relationship with creation: the Essence, the Holy Spirit and the Son.

3. “They reject the atonement and the bodily resurrection”
Bahá’ís affirm the crucifixion as Christ’s supreme sacrifice, through which he gave spiritual life to the world, and they affirm the Resurrection as real. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá taught that it was spiritual: Christ’s spirit lived on, and the disciples were raised from fear to faith. This differs from orthodox belief and should be acknowledged as such. Christians themselves have held several theories of the atonement (ransom, Christ’s victory over evil, moral influence), and penal substitution became dominant mainly after the Reformation. Paul also speaks of a “spiritual body” (1 Cor 15:44).

4. “Jesus said he is the only way (John 14:6), so the Bahá’í view is relativism”
Bahá’ís read “the Way” as the Word of God, through whom God is known in every age. That same Word spoke through Moses, Christ and Bahá’u’lláh. John 1:9 says the Light enlightens everyone, and John 10:16 speaks of “other sheep” that will become one flock. Bahá’ís are not relativists: they hold that Bahá’u’lláh is the Messenger for this age and that human beliefs can be mistaken. Many Christians read John 14:6 exclusively, so this remains a real disagreement. The Bahá’í reading includes Christ without excluding others.

5. “Christ will return visibly, as the same Jesus, on the clouds” (Acts 1:11; Matt 24:30; Rev 1:7)
Jews expected the literal Elijah to descend before the Messiah (Mal 4:5), yet Jesus said John the Baptist was Elijah (Matt 11:14; 17:12–13). It was the same spirit in a different person, and many missed it by reading literally. Bahá’ís say the same pattern applies: Christ’s spirit and power returned in Bahá’u’lláh. “Clouds” symbolise what veils a Messenger, such as human form, unfamiliar origins and tradition. Jesus also said he would come “like a thief” (Matt 24:43), meaning unexpectedly, and promised “a new name” (Rev 3:12).

6. “Jesus warned of false prophets and false Christs” (Matt 7:15; 24:24)
The warning is real, and Jesus gave the test: “by their fruits” (Matt 7:16–20). Bahá’ís point to Bahá’u’lláh’s forty years of imprisonment and exile for teaching unity, his refusal of revenge, and a worldwide community in over 200 countries built on racial unity, nonviolence and service. Gamaliel’s principle also applies (Acts 5:38–39): what is merely human will fail. The same warnings were turned against Jesus by his opponents (Matt 12:24). Critics may apply the test and reach other conclusions, and Bahá’ís simply invite honest investigation.

7. “The Comforter and Spirit of Truth already came at Pentecost” (John 14:16; Acts 2)
Bahá’ís accept that Pentecost was a real outpouring of the Spirit. Yet Jesus said the Spirit of Truth would “guide you into all truth” and “declare the things to come,” and that his disciples could not yet bear everything he had to say (John 16:12–13). Bahá’ís understand that promise as pointing beyond the first century, and they see it fulfilled in Bahá’u’lláh. They do not claim Bahá’u’lláh is God incarnate. Bahá’í writings also use “Holy Spirit” for the divine bounty that inspires all the Messengers.

8. “Date-setting around 1844 and Daniel 8:14 is a misuse of prophecy, and Miller’s prediction failed”
Many Christian scholars before 1844 (Bengel, Wolff, Miller and others) read Daniel’s 2,300 “days” as years running from the decree in Ezra 7 (457 BC), pointing to 1844 and expecting something momentous. The Báb declared his mission in May 1844. Bahá’ís do not say Miller was right about the manner of the event, only that the date pointed to a real one. This is an interpretive argument and cannot be proven. The Bahá’í case rests more on Bahá’u’lláh’s teachings and their fruits than on date calculations.

9. “Bahá’ís read the Bible allegorically and inconsistently”
Christians also read through Christ: Matthew 2:15 applies Hosea 11:1 to Jesus, Paul calls Hagar and Sarah an “allegory” (Gal 4:24), and Jesus used symbolic language (“born again,” “destroy this temple,” “let the dead bury their dead”). Bahá’u’lláh’s Kitáb-i-Íqán argues that each Messenger was rejected because people took prophecies literally, as when Jesus’ contemporaries expected an earthly king. The caution is fair: interpretation must be principled. The Bahá’í principle is to read symbolically where Scripture itself signals symbol, and to test readings against their fruits.

10. “Bahá’ís undermine the Bible’s authority and inerrancy”
Bahá’ís affirm the Bible as the Word of God. Bahá’u’lláh’s complaint is less about textual corruption than about misinterpretation by religious leaders. Scholars note that some passages, such as Mark 16:9–20 and John 7:53–8:11, are absent from the earliest manuscripts, and formal “inerrancy” as a doctrine was set out mainly in modern times (for example the 1978 Chicago Statement), not held by all Christians. The real difference is that Bahá’ís also recognise divine authority in later revelation.

11. “The Bahá’í Faith is syncretism, a blend of religions”
The Bahá’í Faith is an independent religion with its own founder, scripture (the Kitáb-i-Aqdas), laws and institutions, and it does not mix rites from other faiths. It claims that one God has sent successive Messengers whose spiritual teachings agree while social laws change. That is a claim about history, not a blend. Early Christians likewise claimed continuity with the Hebrew Scriptures while forming a distinct faith.

12. “Saying Christianity has been superseded is arrogant”
Bahá’u’lláh and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá honoured Christ deeply, and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá spoke in churches across Europe and North America. Bahá’ís do not call Christianity false. They teach that spiritual truths are eternal while social laws are adapted to each age, which is what Christians say about the Mosaic law (Acts 15; Gal 3:24–25; Heb 8:13). Bahá’ís also teach that Bahá’u’lláh is not the last Messenger, and that another will come after at least a thousand years. The Faith does not present itself as final.

13. “Bahá’u’lláh performed no miracles to authenticate his claim”
Jesus refused to give signs on demand (Matt 12:39; 16:4; John 4:48), and his opponents explained his miracles away (Matt 12:24). Bahá’u’lláh taught that miracles prove little to those who did not witness them, and that the real proof is the Word and its power to transform people and societies. Bahá’ís do not rule out miracles, but ‘Abdu’l-Bahá read many accounts symbolically, such as raising the dead as spiritual awakening. Sceptics may find this insufficient, and the Bahá’í answer is that transformation, not spectacle, is the lasting evidence.

14. “They deny original sin and salvation by grace”
Bahá’u’lláh teaches that humans are created noble, in God’s image, with a higher and a lower nature, and that sin is choosing the lower. Bahá’ís also teach that no one can reach God without divine grace, which comes through recognising God’s Messenger, and that good deeds are acceptable only on the basis of faith. So the Faith is not salvation by works alone. The doctrine of inherited guilt is also not universal among Christians: the Eastern Orthodox do not hold the Augustinian form of it, and Ezekiel 18:20 says a child does not bear a parent’s guilt.

15. “There is no literal heaven, hell or final judgement”
Bahá’ís affirm that the soul is eternal and that there is judgement, reward and loss. Heaven is nearness to God and hell is remoteness from God, understood as spiritual conditions rather than places. Jesus used vivid images (fire, outer darkness, the worm) and many Christians also read them as states of the soul. C.S. Lewis imagined hell as a door locked from the inside, and Origen held a hope of eventual restoration. Bahá’ís still differ from many Christians on the details of final judgement.

16. “Bahá’ís accept evolution, contradicting Genesis”
Bahá’ís teach that science and religion are two sources of knowledge that must agree, and that religion contradicting established science is superstition. They read Genesis symbolically, with Adam as the first Manifestation of the human spiritual story. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá taught that humanity developed over very long ages while being distinct in its spiritual nature. Christians have also read Genesis symbolically since early centuries, as did Origen and Augustine, and the Catholic Church accepts evolution with the soul as a special creation. Young-earth Christians will still see this as a real disagreement.

17. “No clergy, baptism or communion”
Bahá’ís have no priesthood or sacraments, in order to keep faith direct and to prevent a separate priestly class, an aim shared with Jesus’ words in Matthew 23:8–12. Worship is in “spirit and truth” (John 4:24). Core practices include daily obligatory prayer, a nineteen-day fast and the Nineteen Day Feast. They hold that the true baptism is of the Spirit (Matt 3:11). The Quakers and the Salvation Army also practise no outward sacraments.

18. “The Bahá’í Faith preaches equality yet bars women from the Universal House of Justice”
Bahá’u’lláh and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá taught the full equality of women and men, and women serve on local and national Spiritual Assemblies, Continental Boards and as Counsellors. Bahá’ís are also asked to prioritise girls’ education. Membership of the Universal House of Justice is male, based on the sacred text, and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá said the wisdom of this would become clear in the future. This is comparable to Catholic and Orthodox male priesthood. It is honest to say that many people, including some Bahá’ís, find this difficult, and the Bahá’í answer asks for trust rather than claiming a full explanation today.

19. “The administration is authoritarian, and ‘Covenant-breakers’ are shunned”
There is no clergy, elections are by secret ballot with no nominations or campaigning, and individuals are free to question and investigate. The Universal House of Justice legislates on matters the texts do not cover, and its authority concerns the affairs of the Faith, not science or private conscience. Christians have parallels in Acts 15 and Matthew 16:19; 18:18. “Covenant-breaking” is not ordinary doubt or leaving the Faith but actively trying to split the community or claim authority one does not hold. Christian practice also includes avoiding such people (Matt 18:17; 1 Cor 5:11; 2 John 10). Critics find the practice harsh, and Bahá’ís respond that it exists to protect unity after a long history of Christian division.

20. “The Bahá’í God is unknowable, but Christianity offers a personal relationship (John 17:3)”
Bahá’ís hold that God’s essence is beyond human understanding, as the Bible itself says: “no one has ever seen God” (John 1:18; 1 Tim 6:16). Yet God is truly known through his attributes and through his Messengers, as in “no one knows the Father except the Son” (Matt 11:27) and John 14:9. Bahá’í prayers address God as the Beloved, the Merciful and the Friend, and they are as personal as any Christian prayer. In the Bahá’í view, knowing Christ is how people have known the Father, and knowing Bahá’u’lláh is how they know him today.
