1. “Muhammad is the Seal of the Prophets, so no one can come after him” (Qur’an 33:40)
Bahá’ís accept this verse and affirm Muhammad as the Seal of the Prophets. Bahá’u’lláh himself writes of Muhammad’s station with great reverence in the Kitáb-i-Íqán. The disagreement is about what “seal” means. Bahá’ís understand it as the close of the long cycle of prophecy that began with Adam and prepared humanity for the age of fulfilment. They hold that Bahá’u’lláh does not belong to that cycle of preparation but is the One whom all earlier Messengers promised. Muslims themselves already believe that Jesus will return after Muhammad, which shows that “seal” is not understood to rule out every further divine figure. The Qur’an also says that God sends messengers to “the children of Adam” (7:35), a verse addressed to humanity as a whole. It criticises those who, after Joseph, said God “will never send a messenger after him” (40:34). Bahá’ís read that as a warning against closing the door on God’s guidance. It is fair to say that most Muslim scholars read 33:40 and the hadith on finality as meaning no revelation of any kind after Muhammad, and Bahá’ís do not claim to have settled this by argument. They ask only that their reading be understood as sincere, and not as a denial of Muhammad’s rank.
2. “Only Islam is accepted by God (3:19; 3:85), and He has already perfected it (5:3)”
Bahá’ís begin with the Qur’an’s own use of the word. “Islam” means submission to God, and the Qur’an applies it to earlier faithful communities. Abraham was “a Muslim” who was neither Jew nor Christian (3:67), and the disciples of Jesus said “we are Muslims” (3:52). Read this way, 3:19 and 3:85 say that the only religion God accepts is wholehearted submission to Him, which every Messenger taught in his own age. The Qur’an also says that Jews, Christians and Sabians who believe in God and the Last Day and do good will have their reward (2:62; 5:69), which is hard to reconcile with a narrower reading. On 5:3, Bahá’ís agree that Islam was complete and perfect for the community and the age it was revealed to. The same book says “for every age there is a Book” (13:38), and that when God abrogates something He brings “better or similar” (2:106). Jews believed the Torah complete and Christians believed the same of the Gospel, yet the Qur’an did not treat either as the last word. Many Muslim scholars read 3:19 and 5:3 as referring specifically to the religion of Muhammad. This remains a genuine disagreement, and Bahá’ís do not hide it.
3. “Bahá’u’lláh abolished the Sharia and replaced it with man-made laws”
Bahá’ís do not say that Islamic law was wrong. They say it was right for seventh-century Arabia, as the Mosaic law was right for its time. The Qur’an itself describes God’s laws as changing. Jesus came “to make lawful for you some of what had been forbidden” (3:50), the Prophet was sent to lift “the burdens and shackles” from earlier communities (7:157), and “to each of you We have given a law and a way” (5:48). Muslims already accept that Islam replaced parts of earlier law, so the principle of progressive law is not foreign to the Qur’an. In the Bahá’í view Bahá’u’lláh’s laws are not man-made: they were revealed in the Kitáb-i-Aqdas, and the Universal House of Justice legislates only on matters the text does not cover. Much is shared with Islam: daily prayer, fasting, the prohibition of alcohol, drugs, gambling, theft, adultery and backbiting, reverence for parents, honesty and charity. The main difference lies in social laws such as the physical punishments (hudud), which Bahá’í law replaces with penalties such as fines, imprisonment or exile, aimed at reform. Bahá’ís recognise that for Muslims the Sharia is the final divine law, and that this is a deep difference, not a misunderstanding.
4. “Bahá’ís do not keep the Five Pillars: they pray, fast and face a different direction”
Bahá’ís keep their own prescribed acts of worship, which resemble the pillars in intention. They say an obligatory daily prayer, fast for nineteen days each year from sunrise to sunset, give through the Ḥuqúqu’lláh (a payment from surplus wealth), and make pilgrimage to Bahá’í holy places, today in Haifa and Acre. When saying the obligatory prayers they face the Shrine of Bahá’u’lláh at Bahjí, called the Qiblih. Muslims will say the qibla is the Ka’ba, fixed by the Qur’an. Yet the Qur’an itself shows that God changed the qibla, first towards Jerusalem and then towards Mecca (2:142–150), “that We might know who follows the Messenger from those who turn back” (2:143). Bahá’ís intend no disrespect to the Ka’ba, which they honour as the House of Abraham, but they do not perform the Hajj as an obligation. They affirm that the spirit of each pillar, which is prayer, fasting, charity and pilgrimage, stays central to spiritual life. Muslims regard the five pillars as permanent, so this is a genuine difference of law.
5. “The Báb cannot be the Mahdi: the Mahdi is the hidden Twelfth Imam (Shia) or a descendant of the Prophet who will appear with Jesus (Sunni)”
Bahá’ís believe the Báb is the Qá’im, or Mahdi, whom Muslims were promised, and that Bahá’u’lláh is the Promised One whom the Báb foretold. Several facts are cited. The Báb declared himself in 1844, which is 1260 AH, the very year that Shaykhi leaders, following Siyyid Kázim, had taught that the Qá’im would appear. He was a Siyyid, a descendant of the Prophet, from Shiraz, and bore the Prophet’s name, ‘Alí-Muhammad. He called people to the Qur’an and honoured the Prophet’s family. Bahá’ís also point out that the Mahdi traditions are hadith, not Qur’anic text, and that Sunnis and Shi’a disagree sharply about them, including whether the Mahdi has already been born. Some traditions describe dramatic signs or conquest by the sword, which Bahá’ís read as symbolic. The Qur’an repeatedly says earlier peoples rejected Messengers because they did not match expectations (2:87). The Báb was executed in Tabriz in 1850, yet his followers’ suffering did not end the cause, just as the Prophet’s early followers suffered and the cause prevailed. Sunni and Shi’a scholars alike reject the Báb’s claim. Bahá’ís respect that this is a matter of faith on which the two communities part ways.
6. “Jesus himself will return from heaven; he is not replaced by someone else”
Muslims base this on the Qur’an’s statement that God raised Jesus to Himself (4:158), on the verse that calls him “a sign of the Hour” (43:61), and on hadith describing his descent. Bahá’ís do not deny Jesus’ high rank: the Qur’an calls him the Messiah, the Word of God and a Spirit from Him (4:171). Their position is that “return” in scripture refers to the return of a spiritual reality and not of the same physical person. The Jews expected the literal Elijah before the Messiah, but in the Gospel account Jesus identified John the Baptist as Elijah in spirit and power (Matthew 11:14). Many missed the fulfilment because they waited for a literal return. Shi’a Muslims use a similar idea when they speak of the “return” (raj’a) of Imam Husayn and the Imams, and Bahá’ís hold Bahá’u’lláh to be the return of Christ and of Husayn in spirit. One hadith in Ibn Majah says “there is no Mahdi except Jesus”. Many scholars regard it as weak, but it shows that Muslims have long differed on how the promised figures relate. Bahá’ís recognise that most Muslims expect Jesus son of Mary himself to descend, and that their reading is not the majority one.
7. “Bahá’u’lláh claims divinity, which is shirk (associating partners with God)”
Bahá’ís are firm monotheists. They hold that God’s essence is unknowable, and that neither Bahá’u’lláh nor any Messenger is God or a part of God. Bahá’u’lláh described himself as a man like others who was taught by God, and called himself a servant of God. Muslim critics usually cite passages where he speaks in the first person as God. Bahá’ís explain that Messengers have two stations: the human station, in which they are servants of God, and the station in which they speak with God’s voice because they convey His Word. The Qur’an shows the same pattern. The Prophet is told to say “I am only a man like you to whom it has been revealed” (18:110). Yet the Qur’an also says “whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed God” (4:80), “those who pledge allegiance to you pledge allegiance to God” (48:10), and “you did not throw when you threw, but God threw” (8:17). The hadith qudsi likewise record words of God spoken in the first person through the Prophet. Bahá’ís accept that these distinctions need careful explanation, and they do not take offence that Muslims guard tawhid so closely, because they guard it too.
8. “Treating all Messengers as one reduces the unique rank of Muhammad”
The Qur’an says both that Muslims “make no distinction between any of His messengers” (2:285) and that “some of these messengers We have favoured above others” (2:253). Bahá’ís keep both ideas. The Messengers are one in their source, purpose and spiritual reality, like the same sun rising on different days. Yet they differ in the scope of their mission, the capacity of the people they address, and the revelation they bring. Bahá’ís do not teach that Muhammad was ordinary or interchangeable. Their writings honour the Prophet in reverent terms and recognise that the Qur’an transformed people from scattered tribes into a civilisation of learning. The principle of progressive revelation does not mean that later Messengers are better as persons than earlier ones. It means that a revelation for a more mature humanity can address more. Muslims may still feel that this lowers Muhammad’s place, because they believe his revelation is the highest and final. Bahá’ís accept that this belief is sincerely held and is not a mistake they need to correct.
9. “The Qur’an is the final Book, preserved by God (15:9); a new scripture cannot stand beside it”
Bahá’ís affirm that the Qur’an is the Word of God and that its text has been preserved. They do not claim it was corrupted, and Bahá’u’lláh’s Kitáb-i-Íqán is built around Qur’anic verses. They read 15:9, “We have sent down the Reminder and We are its guardian”, as guaranteeing the preservation of the Qur’an, not as saying that no further Book would come. The Qur’an teaches that God has sent Books to many peoples. It confirms the Torah and the Gospel as revealed by God (3:3; 5:46), calls itself “confirming what came before it and a guardian over it” (5:48), and says “for every age there is a Book” (13:38). A revelation after Muhammad does not erase the Qur’an, any more than the Qur’an erased belief in the earlier Scriptures as God’s Word. The Qur’an remains the authoritative text of Islam, and Bahá’ís do not ask Muslims to stop reading it. Many Bahá’ís read it with devotion. The real disagreement is whether God has spoken since, and that is what lies behind each of these questions.
10. “Bahá’ís explain away the Resurrection, Paradise, Hell, angels and the Night Journey as symbols”
Bahá’ís do not deny them. They affirm the Day of Judgement, the survival of the soul, reward and loss in the next life, and the reality of spiritual beings. They say that scripture’s descriptions are in the language of symbol, and that heaven and hell are real states of nearness to God and remoteness from Him. The Qur’an itself says some verses are clear and others are allegorical, and that “none knows their interpretation except God and those firmly grounded in knowledge” (3:7). Muslim thinkers have long used ta’wil. Ibn Sina emphasised the spiritual nature of the afterlife, Mulla Sadra gave the resurrection a deeply inner and philosophical account, and Sufis read Paradise and Hell as inner conditions. Some early reports even attribute to ‘A’isha the view that the Night Journey was a vision of the spirit and not a physical journey, though most scholars favour the physical one. Shi’a theology also holds that the Imams know the inner meaning (batin) of the Qur’an. Bahá’ís therefore see their approach as part of the Islamic tradition of interpretation. They accept that most Muslim scholars read these matters literally, and that a majority position is not the same as binding proof.
11. “The Bahá’í teaching that Jesus was crucified contradicts the Qur’an (4:157)”
Bahá’ís affirm that Jesus was crucified, and that this was the supreme sacrifice through which his spiritual influence spread. They hold this on the basis of history and the Gospels, and they recognise that the Qur’an says “they did not kill him nor crucify him, but it was made to appear so to them” (4:157), followed by “God raised him to Himself” (4:158). Most Muslims understand this to mean that Jesus was not crucified, and Bahá’ís do not hide that their view differs. They add that Muslim commentators have not agreed on how to read the verse. The Qur’an does not say who was substituted, early commentators gave many different accounts, and some have taken the verse as denying that Jesus’ enemies succeeded in destroying him or his mission, which is also what Bahá’ís believe. The same Qur’an quotes Jesus saying “peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die and the day I am raised alive” (19:33), a verse that mentions his death. The two communities share the central Muslim teaching on Jesus: he is the Messiah, the Word of God and a Spirit from God, and his cause triumphed. The difference over this historical detail is real but does not touch his station.
12. “Bahá’u’lláh brought no miracle, and the Báb’s Arabic does not match the inimitable style of the Qur’an (2:23; 17:88)”
Muslims hold that the eloquence of the Qur’an is the Prophet’s lasting miracle. Bahá’ís agree that the Word of God is the greatest proof of a Messenger, and this is the proof they offer. Bahá’u’lláh revealed thousands of tablets, books and prayers in Arabic and Persian, often dictated at great speed while a prisoner. The first chapter of the Báb’s commentary on the Surah of Joseph was revealed on the night of his declaration, according to the eyewitness Mulla Husayn. Bahá’ís do not claim these equal the Qur’an in rank for Muslims. They say the same kind of proof is being offered, namely the power of the Word to change souls and societies. On miracles, the Qur’an records that the Quraysh demanded signs and that the Prophet answered “Am I anything but a human messenger?” (17:93; see also 6:109). The Prophet’s opponents called him a poet and a dreamer (21:5), just as some critics of the Báb faulted his Arabic. Bahá’ís do not deny that miracles can occur but hold that they do not compel faith and are not the basis of Bahá’í belief. Muslims will naturally measure every claim against the Qur’an, and Bahá’ís respect that.
13. “Bahá’ís are apostates (murtaddin), and Islamic law allows them to be punished”
Bahá’ís do not consider themselves Muslims who left Islam. They are followers of a new, independent religion, much as the Prophet’s followers did not see themselves as apostates from the religion of Quraysh. The Qur’an gives no worldly punishment for leaving the religion. It says “there is no compulsion in religion” (2:256), “let whoever wills believe and whoever wills disbelieve” (18:29) and “to you your religion and to me mine” (109:6). The verses on apostasy, such as 2:217 and 3:90, speak of loss in the hereafter. The death penalty comes from later hadith and juristic opinion, which Muslim scholars today debate, and many reformist scholars limit it to treason or armed rebellion. In 2008 the Iranian Grand Ayatollah Montazeri issued a ruling that Bahá’ís are entitled to the rights of citizens, and Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights protects the freedom to change one’s religion. In practice, Bahá’ís in Iran have faced severe persecution since 1979: more than 200 have been killed or executed, and thousands have lost jobs, property and access to universities. Bahá’ís do not ask Muslims to give up their law. They ask that conscience be left to God, and they note that many Muslims have spoken against the mistreatment of Bahá’ís.
14. “The Bábí and Bahá’í movements were created or used by Russia and Britain to weaken Islam”
This accusation has circulated since the nineteenth century, but historians have not found evidence for it. The Báb and Bahá’u’lláh came from within Iranian society and were imprisoned, exiled and persecuted by the Qajar and Ottoman governments. Bahá’u’lláh was banished from Iran to Baghdad, then to Istanbul, Edirne and finally the prison city of Acre, which is hardly the path of someone supported by an empire. Thousands of early Bábís, mostly ordinary Iranians, died for their faith and not for any political cause. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá was knighted by Britain in 1920 for helping to prevent famine in Palestine during the First World War, and he never used the title. Bahá’ís are honest that in the 1840s and 1850s some Bábís took up arms in defence at sieges such as Mazandaran, Zanjan and Nayriz, and that Bahá’u’lláh later forbade holy war. His teaching forbids partisan political activity and urges obedience to the government of one’s country, and Bahá’ís have not organised armed or partisan movements since. The same kind of accusation was made against the Prophet’s followers by their enemies. Bahá’ís ask only that the community be judged by its actual conduct.
15. “Bahá’ís are linked to Israel and Zionism because their world centre is in Haifa and Acre”
The Bahá’í holy places are in Haifa and Acre for a historical reason that has nothing to do with Zionism. The Ottoman Empire exiled Bahá’u’lláh to the prison city of Acre in 1868, and he died near there in 1892. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá laid the Báb’s remains to rest on Mount Carmel in 1909, nearly forty years before the State of Israel existed. When the state was founded in 1948, the Bahá’í centre was already there, as the Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem were, and the Bahá’í World Centre has not changed because of any political event. Bahá’ís are forbidden to take part in partisan politics, and the Faith takes no side in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict beyond calling for justice and peace for everyone. The Bahá’í World Centre has stated that Bahá’ís do not engage in teaching activity in Israel. The staff at the World Centre are volunteers from many countries. The Faith is also persecuted in Iran by a state that accuses it of Zionism, which shows how the accusation is used. Many Muslims feel deep pain about Palestine, and Bahá’ís respect that feeling. They ask only not to be held responsible for a political situation they did not create.
16. “Bahá’ís abolished jihad, which is an obligation in Islam”
Bahá’u’lláh abolished holy war, and Bahá’ís are committed to non-violence. They do not say that jihad in Islam was wrong. The Qur’an permitted fighting in self-defence when the Muslim community was attacked and expelled (2:190; 22:39), and the early Muslims faced real threats to their survival. Bahá’ís believe the conditions of that time have passed and that humanity is now called to unity. They also hold that a faith spread by the sword would contradict the Qur’an’s own rule that “there is no compulsion in religion” (2:256). The Arabic word jihad means striving, and the Qur’an uses it for non-violent striving as well. The Meccan verse 25:52 tells the Prophet to “strive against them with it [the Qur’an] a great striving”, and 29:69 promises guidance to those who strive for God. Many Muslim scholars today understand jihad mainly as moral and spiritual striving, and as defence only when attacked, which is close to the Bahá’í view in practice. Bahá’ís recognise that classical jurists treated jihad as a continuing duty and that its abolition is a major difference. They suggest that the Qur’an’s call to peace (8:61; 2:208) is the direction in which God is leading humanity.
17. “The Bahá’í teaching of the full equality of men and women contradicts Islamic rulings on inheritance, testimony and leadership”
Bahá’ís teach that women and men are equal in the sight of God and should have equal access to education, work and public life. Where resources are limited, the education of girls takes priority. They recognise that Islam raised the status of women in seventh-century Arabia. It condemned the burying of girl infants (81:8–9), gave women rights to inherit and own property, and declared that believing men and women are “allies of one another” (9:71) with equal spiritual reward (33:35). Bahá’ís suggest that the specific rulings of 4:11 and 2:282, which give men a double share and treat two women as witnesses in a financial contract, fitted the social and economic realities of that time, when men bore the financial responsibility for families. Many modern Muslim scholars also argue for contextual readings. Bahá’ís accept that traditional Muslim jurisprudence regards these rules as binding and that the difference is real. They also acknowledge that the Faith has its own difficult question: the members of the Universal House of Justice are men, for reasons Bahá’ís accept as a matter of faith and expect will become clear in time. Women serve in all other institutions, including local and national assemblies and as Counsellors.
18. “Bahá’ís reject the ‘ulama, the Imams and the Sunnah and put their own leadership in their place”
Bahá’ís have deep respect for the Prophet’s example and for the Imams, whom the Báb’s and Bahá’u’lláh’s writings praise, and they revere ‘Alí and Husayn in particular. The Bahá’í Faith has no clergy. Its authority follows the line set out in Bahá’u’lláh’s Covenant, which passes through ‘Abdu’l-Bahá and Shoghi Effendi to the elected Universal House of Justice. This is similar in purpose to the Shi’a idea of continuing authority, though not the same, and it serves as a safeguard against division. Bahá’ís also take a lesson from the historical role of religious leaders in rejecting Messengers, and the Qur’an itself criticises those who “take their rabbis and monks as lords besides God” (9:31). Muslim scholars did enormous work to preserve the Prophet’s sayings, and Bahá’ís recognise that gathering hadith took generations. Bahá’u’lláh’s writings, by contrast, were written in his own hand or by his secretary, so their text is not in question. Muslims will disagree that any further source of authority can be added, and Shi’a Muslims will not accept the Bahá’í understanding of the Imams’ rank. Bahá’ís accept that these are matters of sincere belief on both sides.
19. “Bahá’ís use deception (taqiyya) and target Muslims for conversion”
Truthfulness is among the most emphasised Bahá’í virtues, and Bahá’u’lláh taught that it is the foundation of all human virtues. Bahá’ís teach openly when they teach, and they do not use bribes, pressure or false claims. Bahá’í teaching is guided by the Qur’an’s own rule for inviting others: “invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and debate with them in the best manner” (16:125; see also 29:46). Muslims also invite others to Islam, and Bahá’ís do so in the same spirit. Bahá’í law also requires obedience to the law of the land, so in countries where teaching a religion to Muslims is forbidden, Bahá’ís do not do so. Where Bahá’ís in Iran face persecution, they have sometimes had to be careful about speaking, as Muslims in Mecca were before the Hijra, and the Qur’an recognises that believers under compulsion may conceal their belief (16:106). Bahá’ís are asked to speak respectfully of other religions and to associate with the followers of all faiths in friendship. Muslims may reasonably prefer that no one try to change their religion, and Bahá’ís respect that choice. They ask only that their own freedom to share their faith peacefully, as Muslims do, be respected as well.
20. “Muslim scholars of all schools agree (ijma’) that the Bahá’í Faith lies outside Islam”
Bahá’ís agree. They have never claimed to be Muslims or a sect of Islam, and they say plainly that the Bahá’í Faith is an independent religion. An Egyptian religious court said the same in 1925. The real question is whether a consensus of scholars proves that a new revelation is false. The leaders of Quraysh and many of the rabbis of Medina were united in rejecting the Prophet Muhammad, yet the Qur’an teaches that numbers do not prove truth: “if you obey most of those on earth, they will lead you astray” (6:116). Bahá’ís recognise that ijma’ concerns questions within Islam, whereas the Bahá’í claim is that a new Messenger has come, and no Muslim can be asked to accept this simply on Bahá’í authority. They ask instead for what the Qur’an itself requires: independent investigation, fairness, and freedom to follow conscience. Many Muslim thinkers, in Iran and elsewhere, have argued that whatever one believes about Bahá’í claims, Bahá’ís should be treated with justice and not harmed. The Qur’an commands justice even towards those we disagree with: “do not let hatred of a people prevent you from being just” (5:8).
How Muslims typically respond, and a note on tone
Most Muslim scholars would say that the finality of Muhammad’s prophethood (khatm al-nubuwwa) is a settled article of faith, supported by the Qur’an, the hadith and the consensus of the community, and that symbolic readings cannot override it. They would add that the verses cited in items 1, 2 and 9 have standard Muslim interpretations quite different from the Bahá’í ones, and that the Bahá’í Faith is a new religion and not a continuation of Islam. These are serious objections, and the answers above will not persuade someone for whom the finality of the Prophet is part of the foundation of faith. Items 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 11 are the points where honest acknowledgement of a lasting difference usually builds more trust than argument. The common ground is substantial: one God, reverence for Muhammad and the Qur’an, prayer, fasting, charity, the prohibition of alcohol, and the call to justice. Conversations tend to go better when Bahá’ís begin with that, listen first, and leave the other person free to disagree.
